MUSIC FOR BABIES
This class provides adults the opportunity to play in a musical setting with their babies ages newborn to 18 months old. The activities are designed to awaken the child’s curiosity about music, to develop an aural sense, a sense of beat, a musical perception and to lay the groundwork for singing. All these will be accomplished while building a repertoire of traditional songs and rhymes for the adults. Activities include bouncing, singing, rocking songs and dancing. Family materials include a lovely pouch with rhythm sticks, a rattle, a scarf, a CD and parent handbook.
FAMILY MUSIC
This class is designed to captivate the natural joy of music and movement inherent in toddlers ages 18 months to 3 years. Their parents/caregivers are integral participants in the class. Activities include singing, focused listening activities, dancing and playing simple instruments. In this environment, the child’s musical aptitude is nurtured and skills are developed. Materials include a CD, a rhythm instrument and a song book.
CYCLE OF SEASONS
This class is designed for the child, aged 3-5, who is ready to move on from parent/caregiver participation to the more independent musical activities of singing, chants, rhymes, listening games, instrument playing and movement games. All these activities are precursors to musical literacy which are capturing the window of opportunity for the best musical development. Parents/caregivers will be invited into the last 10-15 minutes of each class to share the new activities of the day. Home materials include a CD, song book and manipulatives to continue the fun and learning at home.
MUSIC MAKERS AND MUSIC MAKERS AROUND THE WORLD
In these classes students, aged 5-8, will increase their musical development by singing songs, learning tonal and rhythmic patterns, hearing and reciting poems, acting stories, participating in movement games and playing instrumental music. Their listening skills will be honed with focused listening activities and their musical skills will include rudimentary notation, pitch matching and ensemble development. All this will be done by focusing on the child’s home environment, natural surroundings and expanded into a wide variety of multi-cultural materials.
Students will be placed into classes appropriate for their ability and experience at the discretion of the instructor.

PIANO CLASS
This class is for children ages 4-8 who have had previous musical training or are auditioned by the instructor for admission to the class. The students will continue to develop their aural skills through singing and movement and then apply the skills to the keyboard. The students in this class will develop a fine background which will prepare them well for individual piano lessons.
TREBLE TROUBADOURS (Chorus)
This auditioned group will provide children ages 8-17 with a unique opportunity to participate in a continuing musical environment that enhances their musical skills in a group with other fine singers and musicians. This chorus will perform several times during the academic year in a public performance and will be singing standard choral literature that is composed with children in mind and maintains a high quality. As participants in this class, the students will continue to enhance their musical literacy by reading music fluently and learning more sophisticated aspects of the literature which they will be performing. A very important part of this chorus will be correct vocal production. Treble Troubadours has performed in Stafford and surrounding communities alone and with LadySong, an adult treble chorus. Participants from Treble Troubadours have been invited to sing in the American Choral Directors Association Children’s Honors Choir. Materials include choral music, a choral folder, and other materials as deemed necessary by the instructor.
SPECIAL NEEDS
The Family Academy of Music staff has had extensive experience dealing with children with special needs in a music setting. We welcome the chance to work with you and your child to give them an inclusive opportunity in music.
